Kolkata police arrests former TV actress from Burrabazar for gold jewellery and cash theft

Kolkata Police swooped in on a seasoned thief yesterday, unearthing a glittering cache of stolen gold from a former TV actress's residence. The arrest of 42-year-old Rupa Dutta, a former TV actress, came after a theft complaint lodged as a brazen daytime robbery on October 15, 2025, at a bustling shop in Adi Banshtala Lane, Posta area. Victim Dipa Agarwal, while she was shopping her purse lifted between 4:15 PM and 4:30 PM, vanishing with treasures: a 20-gram gold mangal sutra, a 21-gram ladies' neck chain adorned with a Vaishno Devi locket, two gold bracelets tipping the scales at 13 and 9 grams, and cash of Rs. 4,000 in cash. What started as a routine theft complaint under Posta PS escalated into a high-stakes surveillance operation, fueled by sharp CCTV analysis and tip-offs.

Acting on razor-sharp intelligence, the team from the Watch Section, DD—bolstered by local lady constables from near Burrabazar Nanda Ram Market—laid a trap. Their patience paid off yesterday when the former TV actress was nabbed. Grilled in a no-holds-barred interrogation, the accused spilled details leading straight to her Gariahat residence at 63B Garcha Road, Gariahat where officers recovers and seized the exact stolen items: the mangal sutra, the devotional chain, and the pair of bracelets, totaling a dazzling 63 grams of pure gold. No stone was left unturned in upholding legal formalities, ensuring the recovery stood smooth.

Dutta's fall from grace adds a poignant twist to this tale of urban predation. She traded the spotlight for shadows in recent years, honing a covert career in snatch-and-grab thefts across Kolkata. This bust not serves as a stark reminder: in the city's throbbing heart, justice's long arm reaches even the most unlikely culprits, turning faded stars into cautionary headlines
